20 minutes a night!!

It's amazing  the words your child will acquire from just 20 minutes a night of reading!!
They don't (and you don't) have to be the reader the whole time.  They can read along with a book on the computer.  Check out my Link List to find some web-sites that have books you can read on line!!!

Reading Strategies

The best way to demonstrate reading strategies to young children is to read aloud to them.  Children will pick up on subtle things that you do as a reader the more you take the time to read with them.  The first strategy that everyone tries to teach children is to "sound it out", while this can be effecticve some of the time, other strategies can be even more effective because of the complexity of our language.
Reading for understanding is a good tool to teach.  While you are reading leave out a word and see if your child can guess the word.  They probably will know what the missing word is because they know what makes sense.  Start this by leaving out the last word of the sentence and continue with words in the middle.
Encourage your child to use this strategy when they are reading aloud to you.  Instead of asking them to sound out a word, ask them what word would make sense here?  Hopefully your child will internalize this strategy and use it when reading on their own.
